Escarpment Falls GA
Toccoa Falls, highest free falling falls in the
Eastern US (186 feet), is just a short stroll along a graded path.
Enter through the gift shop at Toccoa Falls College. The entry fee
of a few dollars is well worth the treat.
The falls were the scene of a tragic flood in the 1970s when the dam
on Kelly Barnes Lake failed sending 170 million gallons of waters
downstream and over the falls. Thirty nine fatalities were
recorded as a result of this event. Physical evidence can be
seen by the scarred escarpment adjacent to the falls.
The falls are located just north of the city of Toccoa GA.
Follow Alexander Road out of the city and in about 1 mile turn left onto
the Toccoa Falls College Campus. To enter the grounds through the
guard shack we informed the guard that we were on campus to see the falls which
did not pose any problems. Wind your way through campus by
following the signs for the falls (Approximate GPS Coordinates
34º35'38.45"N 83º21'41.36"W). |
