Mile Hike To 5000+ Ft Albert Mtn

A long twisty drive on a forest service road, but a short loop hike and you are up over 5,100 feet on Albert Mountain, west of Franklin NC.  Enjoy great eastern views from summit ledge or unobstructed 360 degree views from the fire tower (the top was locked in August 2007 when we visited, but the stairs were accessible).

For a challenging hike, park where the AT crosses the gravel road just south of the summit ( P1 on Hiking Map below, Approximate GPS Coordinates 35º03'00.83"N  83º28'32.05"W ).  This ascends quickly to the summit in approximately 0.2 mile.  After taking in the view, continue north along the AT and bear left at 0.4 along blue blazed path.  Path ends at gravel parking lot, P2 on hiking map below.  Walk along gravel road back to starting point.  For an easier hike, start at the parking lot P2 and go up and down via the blue blaze trail.
